Tata Steel IJmuiden Blast Furnace No. 6

The 2623 m³ Blast Furnace No. 6 owned and operated by Tata Steel Europe in IJmuiden, The Netherlands, has set benchmarks for modern ironmaking technology. Originally built in 1972, the furnace is currently in only its fourth campaign. The furnace is the ultimate showcase for the integrated cooling and lining design based on copper plate coolers in combination with high–conductivity graphite refractories.
unprecedented campaign lengths
The furnace’s third campaign started after a full reline in 1986 and ended when a revamp project was started in 2023—completing a world–record 37 years.
Ultra–high productivity
During the furnace’s third campaign, productivity levels of over 4.0 tHM/m³WV.d were achieved, emphasizing the technology’s great benefit of allowing the operator to optimize the process without being constrained by the technology’s limitations.
ultra–high pci levels
During the periods of extremely high productivity, Pulverized Coal Injection levels of over 250 kg/tHM were achieved without affecting the integrity of the bosh lining.
