Danieli Corus celebrates 100th Sublance
The first Danieli Corus Sublance, which is one of the key components of the Automatic Steelmaking System, was put into operation in the Summer of 1980. Recently, Danieli Corus was awarded the order for two BOF Process Control Systems including two sublances, two waste gas analyzers and two automatic slag control systems for the new converters at Zhangjiagang Rongsheng Plate Co. Ltd. in China. This brings the total number of references for the Danieli Corus Sublance to 100.
This achievements confirms Danieli Corus leadership in Process Control Technology for BOF Steelmaking. The system has unrivaled hit rates and availability times and the value of the system is reinforced by the extensive process know–how it is based on. This know–how was accumulated during the commissioning and further fine tuning of systems on all continents, working under all kinds of process circumstances.
Ever since its inception, when it brought the operator on–line insight into essential process parameters, the system has been improved to become what it is today. The integrated control system that it has become part of is capable of producing steel with all plant control systems running in full computer mode and recent additions to the capabilities of the sublance itself have been slag sampling and on–line phosphorous measurement of the liquid steel bath.

Granshot pig iron granulation unit commissioned at Essar Steel Hazira
Recently, a Granshot pig iron granulation unit was commissioned at Essar Steel in Hazira, India. The unit is capabla of granulating 140 tonne pig iron heats in less than one hour.
At the 10 Mtpa Hazira production complex, the Granshot facility is an important buffer between the pig iron sources, one blast furnace and two Corex® 2000, and the downstream refining and casting processes in the brand new steel making plant.
The produced Granulated Pig Iron (GPI) is mainly used in the CONARC facilities. Surplus GPI is used as an alternative iron source or is sold as merchant pig iron.
Mr Atul Misra, Sr. Vice President responsible for blast furnace, steel making and casting is satisfied with the initial performance of the Granshot facility. "It allows the blast furnace to produce pig iron with less restrictions from the steel making plant,” says Mr Misra.

Danieli Corus to design first new Blast Furnace in US in 30 years
Danieli Corus has received an order from Charlotte, NC based Nucor Corporation (NYSE: NUE) for the design and supply of a Greenfield Blast Furnace Plant and related installation parts for a new iron–making facility, which may be built in St. James Parish, Louisiana. Nucor has applied for a permit to build the facility on the banks of the Mississippi river near the town of Convent, which is the only U.S. location still under consideration.
The new “Nucor Steel Louisiana” would produce 3 million tons of pig iron per year, giving Nucor enhanced control over their raw material supplies. The project would provide a boost to the state’s economic development and create hundreds of jobs in an area that was hit hard by Hurricane Katrina in 2005. Also, this is a breakthrough for the North American steel industry, since at the time of completion, the site would have the first new Blast Furnace commissioned on the continent in 30 years.
Danieli Corus has supported Nucor in the feasibility studies for this entire project in 2007 and has been awarded this project under commercial terms.
The Danieli Corus scope of the contract as part of the development of the entire Greenfield is as follows.
• Furnace including lining and cooling systems
• Hot blast system
• Slag granulation plant
• Gas gleaning plant
• Pulverized coal injection system
• Charging conveyor belt
• Cast house
• Stock house
• Top gas recovery turbine
• Automation
• Training and operational assistance
All installation parts will be designed and built in full accordance with Danieli Corus’s design philosophies allowing for reliable low cost, high productivity ironmaking through process optimization and long campaign lives for e.g. the furnace proper and hot blast system.
This is the second order for a large Greenfield Blast Furnace Danieli Corus receives in a year’s time. In 2007, work started on a project in Alchevsk, Ukraine.
